Magento to Shopify migration for US ecommerce

Agency Specialized in Magento to Shopify Migration

Moving from Magento to Shopify changes how every product, category and CMS page is addressed. If the old Magento URLs are not mapped to their Shopify equivalents, years of organic visibility can disappear. We handle the search side of the move: URL rewrite inventory, redirect map, catalog data checks and post-launch monitoring. We do not build the Shopify store; your developer or Shopify partner does the build.

At Avafa Consulting we read your Magento URL rewrites before anyone writes a redirect, so each valuable address has a documented destination on Shopify.

Magento specifics

A Magento to Shopify move changes every address in your store.

Magento builds product and category addresses from URL keys, suffixes and a table of URL rewrites. Shopify builds its own from handles under fixed paths. The two never line up on their own. The build and the data transfer belong to your developer or Shopify partner; deciding where each old Magento address lands is the SEO job.

Google’s documentation on site moves with URL changes asks for a mapping from every old URL to a new one and for server-side permanent redirects, such as 301 or 308, that avoid long chains. It also says to change only one thing at a time, which is why a store that changes platform should not also rewrite its category tree on launch day.

Where Magento stores usually carry risk

Rewrites

Custom and generated URLs

Both the addresses Magento generated and the custom rewrites added by hand need a destination on Shopify.

Stores

Store views and languages

Each store view with its own language, currency or domain gets its own slice of the map and its own check.

Extensions

Pages added by modules

Brand pages, blog posts and filter URLs created by extensions have no Shopify twin unless someone decides where they go.

Magento audit table

Magento URL checks before a Shopify launch

Each row is a check specific to Magento, with the file you receive at the end.

Our Magento scope

What our Magento to Shopify SEO service covers

A Magento store holds years of URL decisions. We read them before launch, give your developer exact instructions and check the result in the open.

01Starting point

Magento crawl and rewrite export

We crawl the live store and compare it with the URL rewrite table, the sitemap and Search Console, so you see which addresses earn traffic and links and which are technical leftovers.
02Planning

Rewrite-to-handle map

Each product, category and CMS URL gets a Shopify destination. We flag those that merge, disappear or change path, and note where a Shopify handle will differ from the old URL key.
03Structure

Collections and navigation plan

A Magento category tree rarely matches Shopify collections. We review the planned collections and menus so that important category pages keep a clear, crawlable home.
04Catalog

Product data comparison

We compare titles, descriptions, URL keys and attributes between the Magento export and the product file your developer prepares, and we check the identifiers your shopping feeds use.
05Launch

Cutover verification

On launch day we test the redirect import, status codes, canonicals, sitemaps and robots rules, and we check each store view that moves.
06Monitoring

Post-launch tracking

In the weeks after launch we watch indexing, not-found errors and landing-page performance against the Magento baseline, and we send fixes to your team in writing.
Fit check

Is a Magento to Shopify SEO migration the right service for you?

It usually fits when

  • Your Magento store has years of indexed product and category pages.
  • You run several store views, languages or domains that will merge or split.
  • Extensions created pages, blogs or brand sections that rank today.
  • You plan to restructure categories while changing platform.
  • Your developer builds the Shopify store and wants an SEO owner for the move.

Less relevant when

  • You need someone to design or build the Shopify store.
  • The Magento store has almost no organic traffic to protect.
  • You are staying on Magento for now.

Your developer or Shopify partner handles the build and the data transfer; we handle search. If you are staying on Magento, our Magento SEO agency page is the better starting point.

How we work

How a Magento project runs, step by step

  1. Free audit. We look at your Magento store, its search results and the launch plan, and tell you what could break.
  2. Rewrite export. We pull the URL rewrite table, the sitemap and the Search Console pages into one inventory.
  3. Destination map. We assign a Shopify destination to each address that matters, store view by store view.
  4. Pre-launch review. We crawl the Shopify store before it opens and list indexing, canonical and template issues.
  5. Cutover. We test the redirect import and the key templates on launch day.
  6. Follow-up. We watch the Magento drop-off and the Shopify recovery in Search Console and report each fix.
Monitoring

How we monitor a Magento store after it moves to Shopify

Monitoring starts with a record of how Magento looked in search, so every change after launch has something to be compared with.

  1. Before launch we save the Magento pages that receive organic landings, along with indexed counts for each store view.
  2. After launch we read the Search Console sitemaps report, where warnings about old URLs that now redirect are expected.
  3. We review not-found errors and Googlebot activity in the server logs to find Magento URLs nobody mapped.
  4. We follow how indexed pages move from the old URLs to the Shopify ones, collection by collection.

Google notes that medium-sized sites can take weeks to settle after a move, so we judge progress by trend and by priority URL, not by a single day.

Timeline

Timeline of a Magento to Shopify SEO project

We do not promise results or fixed dates. We describe the sequence so your team knows what comes next.

Before the build: rewrite audit

Ideally we join while the Shopify store is still being designed, read the Magento rewrites and agree the collection and handle plan with your developer.

Before launch: Shopify review

We crawl the Shopify staging store, test the redirect file against a sample and give the team a list of fixes sorted by traffic at risk.

After launch: tracking

We compare indexing and landing pages with the Magento baseline, send corrections to the team and close each item once it is verified.

Common mistakes

Common mistakes when moving from Magento to Shopify

  • Importing redirects for Magento addresses that still load a page on Shopify, where the redirect will not fire.
  • Planning redirects from Shopify’s fixed paths, such as /products or /collections, which Shopify does not allow as a source.
  • Redirecting an .html URL to the same address without .html, which Shopify treats as identical.
  • Sending Magento category paths to the home page rather than to the closest collection.
  • Leaving filter and parameter URLs from layered navigation without a decision.
  • Forgetting store views, so only the default language receives redirects.
  • Launching with staging rules still active or with the old sitemap still submitted.
Shopify side

Shopify rules that shape a Magento redirect plan

According to the Shopify Help Center, redirects are managed under Content, Menus and URL redirects, with a CSV import available. Shopify says a redirect only works on a URL that no longer loads a page, that some paths cannot be a source, including /products, /collections and prefixes such as /cart, and that URLs with query strings may not work as expected. The Help Center also explains that customizing robots.txt means adding a robots.txt.liquid template, which Shopify treats as an unsupported customization. Those limits decide how we write the Magento map.

For a store that also changes domain, our SEO migration agency page explains the general method, and the Magento SEO agency page covers stores that stay on Magento. Clean catalog data feeds Google Merchant Center, catalog integrations connect it to the systems behind the store and eCommerce SEO continues after launch. A move that adds country stores pairs with international SEO, and catalogs fed by a PIM or ERP are covered by ACE for PIM and ERP.

Inputs

What we need from your Magento and Shopify teams

The best moment to join is before the Shopify theme is final, when collections and handles can still change cheaply.

If the store is already built, we compare it with Magento page by page and agree who fixes what before a single redirect is written.

  • Search Console and analytics access for the Magento domain, plus any other store domains.
  • An export of the Magento URL rewrites, or admin access so we can pull it.
  • The list of store views, languages and domains that will move.
  • Staging access to Shopify and a named contact in your development team.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about Magento to Shopify migration

What is a Magento to Shopify migration from an SEO point of view?

+
It is the move of catalog, content and URLs from Magento to Shopify. Search engines only see the addresses, so each Magento URL that matters needs a documented Shopify destination.

What does your team do that my Shopify partner does not?

+
We own the search plan: rewrite inventory, destination map, pre-launch crawl and tracking. Your partner builds the store and imports the data; we give them specifications and test the outcome.

Why do you ask for the Magento URL rewrite table?

+
It shows both the addresses Magento generated and the custom rewrites added over the years, so the map starts from facts instead of from a crawl alone.

Will my Magento product URLs survive on Shopify?

+
Rarely unchanged. Shopify builds product addresses from a handle, and its product CSV uses the handle to match rows with existing products, so we compare every handle with the old Magento path and add the differences to the redirect map. Clean product data also keeps your Google Merchant Center feed pointing at live pages.

What happens to my .html category and product URLs?

+
They need an explicit destination. The Shopify Help Center says an .html URL cannot redirect to the same URL without .html, so we map those addresses to a real Shopify page instead.

Can Shopify redirect from /products or /collections?

+
No. Shopify lists those fixed paths among the ones that cannot be used as a redirect source, so we make sure no row in the map depends on them.

How are several Magento store views handled?

+
Each store view gets its own part of the map. Shopify describes how redirects behave with market and language subfolders, so we list each locale’s paths separately and test them one by one.

What should I do with layered navigation filter URLs?

+
We sort them by value. Google advises keeping URL parameters to a minimum and consolidating duplicates with canonical tags or redirects, so most filter URLs get a canonical or no destination, while the few that earn traffic get a clean collection.

How long do Magento redirects need to stay on Shopify?

+
Google advises keeping redirects for at least one year. Shopify notes that browsers and search engines cache 301 redirects, so removing one later may not take effect right away. We also update internal links so your navigation does not depend on them.

How do I start a Magento to Shopify SEO review?

+
Request the free audit through the contact form and mention how many store views you run and whether the Shopify theme is already built. We reply with the Magento URL groups that need a decision first.
