Moving from Magento to Shopify changes how every product, category and CMS page is addressed. If the old Magento URLs are not mapped to their Shopify equivalents, years of organic visibility can disappear. We handle the search side of the move: URL rewrite inventory, redirect map, catalog data checks and post-launch monitoring. We do not build the Shopify store; your developer or Shopify partner does the build.
Magento builds product and category addresses from URL keys, suffixes and a table of URL rewrites. Shopify builds its own from handles under fixed paths. The two never line up on their own. The build and the data transfer belong to your developer or Shopify partner; deciding where each old Magento address lands is the SEO job.
Google’s documentation on site moves with URL changes asks for a mapping from every old URL to a new one and for server-side permanent redirects, such as 301 or 308, that avoid long chains. It also says to change only one thing at a time, which is why a store that changes platform should not also rewrite its category tree on launch day.
Custom and generated URLs
Both the addresses Magento generated and the custom rewrites added by hand need a destination on Shopify.
Store views and languages
Each store view with its own language, currency or domain gets its own slice of the map and its own check.
Pages added by modules
Brand pages, blog posts and filter URLs created by extensions have no Shopify twin unless someone decides where they go.
Each row is a check specific to Magento, with the file you receive at the end.
| Magento area | Risk on Shopify | How we check | Deliverable |
|---|---|---|---|
| URL rewrites | Generated and custom rewrites lost | Rewrite table exported and compared with the crawl | Annotated rewrite inventory |
| URL suffix | Old .html URLs have no exact destination | Old paths matched against new handles | Path-to-handle sheet |
| Category paths | One product reachable under several paths | One Shopify URL chosen per product | Canonical decision list |
| Filters | Layered navigation URLs indexed | Filter and parameter URLs sorted by value | Keep, redirect or drop list |
| Store views | Languages and domains mixed up | Each store view mapped on its own | Per-store redirect files |
| Extensions | Module pages left without a home | Pages from modules listed and assigned | Page-by-page decision sheet |
| Shopify import | Redirect ignored while old URL loads | Import tested after upload | Import-ready redirect file |
Redirect behavior follows the Shopify Help Center and the move steps follow Google Search Central. The Magento checks are the method we apply at Avafa.
A Magento store holds years of URL decisions. We read them before launch, give your developer exact instructions and check the result in the open.
It usually fits when
Less relevant when
Your developer or Shopify partner handles the build and the data transfer; we handle search. If you are staying on Magento, our Magento SEO agency page is the better starting point.
Monitoring starts with a record of how Magento looked in search, so every change after launch has something to be compared with.
Google notes that medium-sized sites can take weeks to settle after a move, so we judge progress by trend and by priority URL, not by a single day.
We do not promise results or fixed dates. We describe the sequence so your team knows what comes next.
Ideally we join while the Shopify store is still being designed, read the Magento rewrites and agree the collection and handle plan with your developer.
We crawl the Shopify staging store, test the redirect file against a sample and give the team a list of fixes sorted by traffic at risk.
We compare indexing and landing pages with the Magento baseline, send corrections to the team and close each item once it is verified.
According to the Shopify Help Center, redirects are managed under Content, Menus and URL redirects, with a CSV import available. Shopify says a redirect only works on a URL that no longer loads a page, that some paths cannot be a source, including /products, /collections and prefixes such as /cart, and that URLs with query strings may not work as expected. The Help Center also explains that customizing robots.txt means adding a robots.txt.liquid template, which Shopify treats as an unsupported customization. Those limits decide how we write the Magento map.
For a store that also changes domain, our SEO migration agency page explains the general method, and the Magento SEO agency page covers stores that stay on Magento. Clean catalog data feeds Google Merchant Center, catalog integrations connect it to the systems behind the store and eCommerce SEO continues after launch. A move that adds country stores pairs with international SEO, and catalogs fed by a PIM or ERP are covered by ACE for PIM and ERP.
The best moment to join is before the Shopify theme is final, when collections and handles can still change cheaply.
If the store is already built, we compare it with Magento page by page and agree who fixes what before a single redirect is written.
People look for this work as a Magento to Shopify migration, migration services or a Shopify migration agency. For search results the common thread is simple: keep what Magento earned.
Rewrite inventory, destination map, indexing and template checks, catalog data comparison and tracking after launch. We hand your team written specifications and verify the outcome.
