There is no single button that puts a product into ChatGPT, but there are three routes in: your ecommerce platform, OpenAI’s merchant programs and your own website. When someone asks ChatGPT for the best running shoes or a gift under $50, it answers with products, and getting yours into those answers is becoming a channel of its own.
This guide explains the routes, what each requires and how to prepare your catalog, without promising placement, because no one can. If you want the preparation done for you, see our ChatGPT Shopping agency page.
How does ChatGPT find products?
ChatGPT draws on structured product data from commerce platforms and merchant programs, and on information it can access on the web. The better and more current your data, the easier it is for ChatGPT to match your products to a request. A shopper’s question usually contains several constraints at once, such as type, budget, size and delivery time, and every constraint needs a field it can read.
What are the routes in?
1. Through your ecommerce platform
Some platforms make their merchants’ catalogs available to AI assistants. Shopify, for example, switched on what it calls Agentic Storefronts for eligible merchants in March 2026, making their products discoverable in ChatGPT and other assistants. If you use a platform, check what it offers and whether you need to opt in. Also check what the platform publishes: it will send whatever your catalog contains, gaps included.
2. Through OpenAI’s merchant programs
OpenAI has offered ways for merchants to share product feeds and to join its checkout features. These programs have changed over time: Instant Checkout launched in September 2025 and was later reported to be moving into apps. Check the current options before investing in a specific integration. The protocol side is compared in Google UCP vs OpenAI ACP.
3. Through your own website
Make sure OpenAI’s search crawler can access your product pages, and that each page shows price, availability and structured data. According to OpenAI’s crawler documentation, as of October 2026 the crawler for search is called OAI-SearchBot, and a site that opts out of it in robots.txt will not appear in ChatGPT search answers. A separate crawler, GPTBot, relates to model training and is independent of search visibility, so you can treat the two differently. If your robots.txt or bot protection blocks the search crawler, you are opting out.
Which route fits which store?
| Your situation | Start with | What to check | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosted platform with AI-assistant features | Platform route | Whether you are eligible, whether you must opt in, and what data is sent | Assuming it is on by default, or that it fixes weak data |
| Custom or headless storefront | Your own website | Crawler access, product-page structured data, consistent price and stock | Client-side rendering that hides price and availability from crawlers |
| Interested in checkout inside chat | Merchant programs | Current status and eligibility before building anything | Building an integration on a program that has since changed |
| Brand selling through retailers | Your own product pages and the retailers’ feeds | Whether your product data on retailer sites is accurate | Only optimizing your own site |
What gets a product recommended?
- Titles that say what the product is, with brand and key attributes.
- Complete attributes: size, color, material, compatibility, use.
- Accurate, real-time price and stock.
- Identifiers such as GTIN and brand.
- Clear shipping and return information.
We explain each field in the product data AI shopping agents read. If your Google Merchant Center feed is in good shape, most of this work is done.
How do I prepare my catalog, step by step?
- Confirm your platform’s position: does it publish your catalog to AI assistants, is there an opt-in, and which fields does it send?
- Open your robots.txt and your bot-protection or CDN settings. Confirm that OAI-SearchBot is allowed on product and category pages.
- Take 20 best sellers and view their pages as a crawler would, without JavaScript if possible. Price, availability, title and brand should be visible in the page’s HTML.
- Check that each product page carries structured product data and that its price and availability match the page and your feed.
- Rewrite weak titles and fill missing attributes and identifiers, starting with the highest-revenue products.
- Make sure shipping and return policies exist as readable pages and match the feed settings.
- Ask ChatGPT a fixed set of shopper questions about your category, log what it says about your products, and fix wrong facts at the source. Repeat monthly.
What does this look like for a real store? (A hypothetical example)
Imagine a manufacturer with a few thousand SKUs of kitchen equipment, selling through its own storefront. This is an illustration, not a real account.
The audit finds that the storefront loads prices with JavaScript, so the raw page shows an empty price; the bot-protection service challenges unknown crawlers; and half of the product titles are internal model codes. Nothing here is a ChatGPT problem in itself, but each one makes the products hard to read for any assistant. The order of work is: allow the search crawler, render price and availability in the page itself, add structured data, then rewrite titles for the top-selling lines. Only then does it make sense to look at merchant programs.
What mistakes should I watch for?
| Mistake | Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Blocking all AI crawlers with one rule | Robots.txt contains a blanket disallow for known AI user agents | Decide search access and training access separately |
| Price visible only after scripts run | Page source shows no price | Render price and availability in the HTML |
| Chasing a program that changed | Documentation or announcements no longer match your plan | Verify current status before building |
| Title with a model code only | Titles lack product type and key attribute | Rewrite titles to describe the product |
| Feed and page disagree | Different price or stock for the same item | Fix the sync, then recheck |
What should I ask my team or agency before starting?
- What does our platform currently publish to AI assistants, and what is our eligibility?
- Who maintains robots.txt and bot protection, and was the search crawler considered when it was set up?
- Which program or integration are we considering, and when did we last confirm it exists in that form?
- How will we measure traffic from ChatGPT separately in analytics?
- What is being promised? A guarantee of placement is a reason to walk away.
What should I not expect?
ChatGPT is not an ad platform for products today, and there is no guaranteed placement. Many shoppers research in ChatGPT and buy on the store’s site, which is why measuring AI as a discovery channel matters. If your catalog is very small, or you sell only by quote with no public prices, the routes above will not fit well and your time is better spent elsewhere.
How Avafa works
Avafa is a consultancy based in Spain that works remotely with US ecommerce brands, manufacturers, distributors and retailers. We audit the catalog against the checks in this guide, fix the feed foundation in Google Merchant Center and prepare the data for AI assistants. We do not promise placement in ChatGPT or in any AI answer. See the ChatGPT Shopping agency and Google Merchant Center agency pages for the scope of the work.

FAQs
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT?
No. Product recommendations are not sold as ad placements.
Does my store need to sell inside ChatGPT?
No. Being recommended and sending the shopper to your site is valuable on its own.
Should I allow OpenAI’s crawlers?
Allowing the search crawler is what lets your pages appear in ChatGPT search answers. Whether to allow the training crawler is a separate business decision, and the two can be set independently.
How long do robots.txt changes take to apply?
According to OpenAI’s crawler documentation, as of October 2026, changes can take about 24 hours to take effect.
Do I need a Google Merchant Center feed to be in ChatGPT?
Not as a formal requirement, but a clean Merchant Center feed means your titles, attributes and identifiers are already in good shape, and that data can be reused elsewhere.
How will I know if ChatGPT sends traffic?
Look at referral sources and landing pages in your analytics, and treat the numbers as directional, since attribution from AI assistants is still imperfect.
