Google Merchant Center Agency: What It Does and When You Need One

A Google Merchant Center agency manages the account that sends your products to Google: Shopping ads, free listings, the Shopping tab and product results in Search. If the data in Merchant Center is wrong, your products don’t show, no matter how much you spend on ads.

This guide explains what the work includes, what it doesn’t, and the signs that it’s time to bring in specialists.

What Google Merchant Center controls

Merchant Center is the bridge between your online store and Google. Every product you want on Google needs a valid entry there, with a title, price, availability, images, identifiers and shipping details that match your website.

  • Shopping ads in Google Ads, including Performance Max campaigns.
  • Free product listings on the Shopping tab and other Google surfaces.
  • Local inventory for stores with physical locations.
  • Promotions and product ratings shown next to your products.

When Merchant Center rejects a product, it disappears from all of these at once.

What a Google Merchant Center agency does

1. Account setup and verification

Verifying and claiming your website, configuring shipping, returns and business information, and linking Merchant Center to Google Ads. Many later problems start with a setup that was done in a hurry.

2. Product feed creation and management

Building the feed from your platform (Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, PrestaShop or a custom store), choosing which attributes to send and keeping it updated automatically, so prices and stock on Google always match your site.

3. Feed optimization

Rewriting titles and descriptions with the words shoppers actually search, filling attributes such as brand, GTIN, color, size or material, and grouping products with custom labels so campaigns can bid by margin, season or best sellers.

4. Fixing disapprovals and suspensions

Reading the issues Merchant Center reports, diagnosing price and availability mismatches, missing identifiers, policy violations and misrepresentation suspensions, fixing the root cause and requesting a new review.

5. Ongoing monitoring

Merchant Center changes constantly: new requirements, new policies, products that get disapproved after a store update. An agency checks the account on a schedule instead of waiting for sales to drop.

What it doesn’t do

A Merchant Center agency is not the same as a Google Ads agency. Some agencies do both, but the skills are different. Ads management is about bids, budgets and campaign structure; Merchant Center is about product data quality and policy compliance. Good campaigns can’t make up for a weak feed.

Signs you need a Merchant Center agency

  • Products keep getting disapproved and you don’t know why.
  • Your account has been suspended or has a warning, often for misrepresentation.
  • Prices or stock on Google don’t match your store.
  • You are starting to sell in the United States, or adding a new country or language.
  • Your Shopping campaigns spend, but the same few products get all the impressions.
  • You changed platform or theme and products disappeared.
  • The holiday season is close and nobody owns the feed. Our Black Friday 2026 Merchant Center checklist covers what to review first.

Agency, freelancer or in-house?

A freelancer can fix a specific error. An in-house person knows your catalog best, but rarely sees enough accounts to recognize patterns. An agency makes sense when Google Shopping drives a meaningful share of your revenue, when you have a large catalog or several countries, or when a suspension is costing you sales every day.

Questions to ask before hiring

  1. Who will own the Merchant Center account? It should stay in your name, with the agency added as a user.
  2. How will the feed be generated and kept up to date?
  3. What is the process when the account gets suspended?
  4. What do you check every month, and how do you report it?
  5. Have you worked with my ecommerce platform?

How Avafa works

Avafa is a Google Merchant Center agency for ecommerce stores, working in English and Spanish. We start with an account audit, fix what blocks your products, then optimize and monitor the feed. Stores in Florida can see how we approach their market on our Google Merchant Center agency in Florida page.

If you run a PrestaShop store, our guides to connecting PrestaShop with Google Merchant Center and creating a product feed from PrestaShop cover the first steps.

FAQs

Is Google Merchant Center free?

Yes. The Merchant Center account and free product listings have no cost. You only pay if you run Shopping or Performance Max campaigns in Google Ads.

How long does it take to fix a disapproved product?

It depends on the cause. Once the data is corrected, Google reviews the product again, which usually takes a few business days.

Do I need an agency if my store runs on Shopify?

Shopify’s Google app connects your store to Merchant Center, but it doesn’t rewrite titles, fill missing attributes, resolve policy issues or structure products for your campaigns.

Can an agency recover a suspended account?

No one can guarantee a reinstatement, because Google makes the final decision. What an agency can do is find the real cause, fix it across the site and the feed, and request the review with everything in order.
